Was I surprised to see Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers promoting Library Card Sign-Up Month and serving as its Honorary Chair? Not at all! Although he is a professional football player, Polamalu has shown that his occupation doesn’t limit his ability to make a difference off the field. He is engaged with social change efforts that advocate for academic success, educational equity, humanitarian aid and supporting our veterans, as demonstrated on his blog, and through the Troy & Theodora Polamalu Foundation and The Harry Panos Fund for Veterans.
In May, we shared how earning his bachelor’s degree during the NFL lockout in 2011 was of utmost importance to him. Now, his endorsement of public and school libraries not only revisits his personal emphasis on education, but also shows how collaboration and working with others can better serve the common good.
