QUESTION: Which of the following organizations offer internships to students that focus on the AANHPI community?
Asia Society [New York, NY]
Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance, Inc. (OCAPICA) [Garden Grove, CA]
Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF) [Boston, MA]
National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA) [Denver, CO]
All of the above
ANSWER: e) All of the above! There are a number of organizations that are committed to strengthening our AANHPI communities across the nation by supporting and cultivating our youth through internships. Each organization’s internship program is reflective of the organization’s mission, and so each one provides different experiences and opportunities. The above-referenced organizations cover a wide range of interests and locations, and are just a glimpse into the opportunities available at organizations across the country and in the Pacific Islands. Earlier this summer, we also covered DC-based government/policy-focused internship opportunities including APAICS, CAPAL, ILF, OCA, and WHIAAPI. Additional internship opportunities are offered through the Washington Leadership Program (WLP) [Washington, DC], Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) [New York, NY], Akamai Workforce Initiative [islands of Maui and Hawaii], and the East-West Center in Washington [Washington, DC]. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, and we encourage you to share additional opportunities in the comments below.
Internships are a great way to gain exposure to a field or career, and they can even allow you a chance to pursue your interests outside of academia or your current major. Whatever your reason for seeking an internship, we encourage you to look for the opportunity that is right for you and your goals, and to be open-minded about whether the internship is in your hometown or elsewhere.
